Energy is defined as the capacity of a physical system to perform work. However, it's important to keep in mind that just because energy exists, it doesn't mean it's necessarily available to do work.
Energy exists in several forms such as heat, kinetic or mechanical energy, light, potential energy, magnetic energy, chemical energy, nuclear energy, and electrical energy. Other forms of energy may include geothermal energy and classification of energy as renewable or nonrenewable.
According to the law of conservation of energy, the total energy of a system remains constant, though energy may transform into another form. Energy cannot be created, nor destroyed, but it can change forms and is also related to mass.
Energy efficiency is "using less energy to provide the same service". Energy conservation is reducing or going without a service to save energy which means any behaviour that results in the use of less energy.

For example: Turning off a light is energy conservation. Replacing an incandescent lamp with a compact fluorescent lamp (which uses much less energy to produce the same amount of light) is energy efficiency.

Energy is what makes the world go around. Without the continuous supply of energy that most of us take for granted, things would quickly grind to a halt. We are dependent on energy for our very survival. Heating our homes, transportation, communication, health – even our daily food supply – all depends on energy. Imagine the energy requirements for commercial office buildings...thousands of lights, telephones, computers and other appliances, all-consuming massive amounts of energy.
And unfortunately, much of the lighting, appliances, systems and devices used in the marketplace are not energy efficient.
When it comes to energy saving, energy management is the process of monitoring,
controlling, auditing, and conserving energy in a building or organisation. Energy is a limited resource, it's limited by what we can afford, the infrastructure needed to make and distribute it and the availability of the raw materials. Reducing the amount that each one of us consumes addresses all those issues.
As public sentiment toward renewable and green energy alternatives (homes and businesses) begin to sweeten, more and more government programs and tax incentives have sprung up to encourage the use of these energy rebate programs and efficient devices.
However, the availability of these programs to the public doesn't mean that they are necessarily easy to find and to select the suitable and efficient ones.
Technology and the race to clean up the planet's emissions and pollution have created great opportunities in the energy space. The Energy Industry is experiencing rapid expansion and the necessity of Energy Saving and Management Services Consulting (ESMS) companies are significantly amplified.
Building Environmental Systems and Services are what makes a building come to life and provide satisfactory comfort to its residents. These resources utilities one or more forms of energy which should be optimised for maximum savings, health, safety, and sustainability.
